Mary Crowell

Guest of Honor: Mary Crowell

Dr. Mary C. Crowell writes songs about gaming and mythology and adores jazz. She also teaches music theory, piano, and composition in her private studio and occasionally at a community college in north alabama. In addition, she accompanies a choir at a Presbyterian Church. She probably has the most fun though playing bass clarinet in her local community band and acting like a trombone player.

Mary loves participating in creative challenges like Soulwriters, Start With This and FAWM (February Album Writing Month). Mary creates quirky MIDI compositions and arranges instrumental music and also makes silly music videos for her patrons on Patreon. Two of Mary’s short music videos: "I Put My Low Stat" and "M is for Magic Missile" were selected for Origins Game Fair’s film festival in 2021.

Dr. Crowell performs with Play It With Moxie and Three Weird Sisters, releasing respectively Play It With Moxie, Live! (2012) and, Third Thyme’s the Charm (2012). Both bands formed in Atlanta, Georgia through the GAFIA filk community. She also performs with Dead Sexy, Seanan McGuire's back up band.

Mary has released four studio albums: I Have Missed You at My Table (2022); Scattering Seeds on the Pomegranate Tour (2017); Acolytes of the Machine & Other Gaming Stories (2012) recorded at Mystic Fig Studio; and an earlier album, Courting My Muse (2007).

Lately she has been collaborating with C.S.E. Cooney and Tina Connolly on The Devil and Lady Midnight — a delightful, fiendish musical to be released as six podcast episodes. This fall she’ll begin recording her 5th studio album with Mystic Fig Studio inspired by the Negocios Infernales game created by Hernandooney.

Come join pianist and singer, Mary Crowell as she regales you with songs of Radium Girls, Devils, and Dice!
