Windycon is raising its membership rates slightly this year.

Why are we doing this? Well, it comes down to the economy. Although the number of people attending the convention has been relatively stable, the number of hotel rooms that are being booked by our members is down. And that means that we have to pay more for the function space that we’re using at the hotel.
Also, although it’s reported that inflation is under control, the inflation rate that you see reported doesn’t include the price of food – and as you’ve probably noticed, the price of food has been going up a good bit faster. That means that we spend more money on our con suite.
We understand that your budget’s tight too—that’s why some of our local members who used to stay at the hotel in their own room are doubling up or commuting. And we’re happy that you’re doing that, because we love to see you here.
We just need to balance our budget without cutting out the things about the convention that you enjoy. And so the membership rate is going up a bit.
And it’s also going down a bit.
This year—in addition to the free kid-in-tow membership that’s available for children 12 and under—we’re also making available a special kids’ membership for kids 12 and under that doesn’t require a parent or guardian to be with them all of the time at the convention. So if your well-behaved child wants to attend children’s programming, or gaming, or a regular panel, or run by the con suite for some soda, you don’t have to take them there and stay with them.
And if you want to pay for a full weekend of child care in advance, children 10 and under can book a slot in Windycon’s child care. (The kid and kid-in-tow memberships do not include child care. Limited child care may be available at con for a separate charge.)
We’re doing this because we want to make it easier for families on a budget—which is certainly most of us!—to attend Windycon.
And we’re doing it because we want to see the next generation of fandom at the con.
